ASSESSMENT

“The process of collecting evidence and making judgements on whether competency has been achieved to confirm that an individual can perform to the standard expected in the workplace, as specified in a training package or a VET accredited course.” https://www.asqa.gov.au/standards-vac/definitions

Your Shafston teacher will formally assess your skills, knowledge and understanding.   Assessment is competency based, this means you will be required to show / demonstrate the required competencies for the units of competency you are studying.

In order to ensure that Shafston’s assessment is valid, reliable, flexible and fair, Shafston trainers will conduct assessment as per the assessment conditions for each unit of competency you are studying.

There are many different types of assessment.  Multiple and varied assessments are used to ensure that learners are able to demonstrate competency.  We will ensure that the assessment is conducted in a manner that is fair, flexible, valid and reliable.

Assessments have the following sections Activities, Questioning, Project, and Observation which span across these different tasks.   Some of the assessment tasks are ‘stand-alone’ or they may be a combination of these methods of assessment.

There may be

 • Written tasks

Written assessments include case studies, question-answer type tasks, written reports and assignments, including reflective evaluations, self-evaluations,  project work, demonstrations and class presentations.

• Examination

This includes written or spoken ‘question-answer’ type tasks in an examination.

• Observation

Your teacher will observe your performance of tasks in real or simulated workplace environments.  This includes participation in role-plays, group discussions and demonstrations of practical skills and knowledge.  Students on vocational placement will be observed by a qualified professional.

• Vocational Placement

Vocational placement provides the opportunity to observe professionals in your vocation, gain skills specific to your vocation, engage and interact with your community, and most importantly, to apply what you have learnt in the classroom to the ‘real-world’ vocational environment.  You will be mentored and supported by an industry professional and have a valuable opportunity to learn in a structured workplace environment.  Your teacher as well as the industry professional will both observe your ability to apply the skills, knowledge and attitudes required in workplace situations and environments.

• RPL

You may already have the skills and knowledge.  For more information about Recognition of Prior Learning Student Information,  please refer to:  http://shafston.edu/forms-policies-and-procedures/

TIMETABLE

VOCATIONAL PLACEMENT REQUIREMENTS

120 hours of vocational placement is a requirement to successfully complete the CHC43015 Certificate IV in Ageing Support.  Aged Care services require those attending their organisations in a voluntary capacity to provide documentation to confirm the suitability for them to work in this environment.  These are the National Police Check, Blue Card, Yellow Card and Immunisation records.

National Police Check (NPC)

Students can complete the application online at https://www.afp.gov.au/what-we-do/services/criminal-records/national-police-checks .  The original certificate must be sighted by the college. Details of these requirements are available at https://www.afp.gov.au/what-we-do/services/criminal-records/frequently-asked-questions.  Shafston initiates the NPC application process at orientation.

Working with children and people with a disability (Blue Card and Yellow Card)

Students must be able to undertake vocational placement throughout the program and therefore pass the relevant checks applying to each jurisdiction.  Details of these requirements are available at https://www.bluecard.qld.gov.au/.  Shafston initiates the Blue Card application and request for Yellow Card exemption process at orientation https://www.publications.qld.gov.au/dataset/blue-card-and-exemption-card-application-forms/resource/e789bc97-47e7-4432-9dc0-c1677b3f559b.

Immunisation

*After 1 May 2020 visitors, aged care staff, health workers, volunteers and anyone else entering a residential aged care facility will not be allowed to enter the facility if they have not had the 2020 flu vaccine.  Vaccination requirements are reviewed regularly to have the most up to date information on recommended vaccines https://www.health.qld.gov.au/system-governance/legislation/cho-public-health-directions-under-expanded-public-health-act-powers/aged-care/help

Students will be required to present evidence of receiving a flu shot for the current year prior to commencing vocational placement.

http://ncirs.org.au/ncirs-fact-sheets-faqs/influenza-vaccines-australians

It is strongly recommended that applicants provide evidence of the following immunisations to protect themselves and others during their vocational placement:

  • Pertussis (dTpa, provided dTpa has not been given previously), plus a booster if immunisation has not been received within the past 10 years.
  • MMR (if non-immune), and
  • Varicella (if seronegative).

In addition, it is recommended that all Aged Care workers have Hepatitis A & B Vaccination.

Students must be notified that failure to meet the above immunisation recommendations may affect their ability to find a suitable vocational placement, which may affect completion of the course.

(Students are responsible for any costs associated with meeting placement requirements.)
